Dr. Richard C. Carlisle
Class of 1855
Carlisle rose to full Surgeon while serving confederate forces during The War Between The States. He administered and comforted the wounded and dying for the entire conflict, participating in over forty battles until he was captured and held as a P.O.W. late in the war. An all too typical example of Carlisle's exemplary service was at Chickamauga where he cared for 325 wounded and dying men who were under his solitary charge-------- with no other medical assistance. He established a private practice of some note after the war.
