- Kimmons served as the US Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Commanding General, United States Army Intelligence and Security Command and Chief of Staff to the Director of National Intelligence. During Operation urgent Fury in 1983 (the invasion of Grenada), Kimmons served as a Company Commander in the 82d Airborne Division. Kimmons retired from active service on December 1, 2010, after 35 years of distinguished service.
