SMITH, Nathaniel MULLINS, S.C. – Mr. Nathaniel Elmore Smith, 88, husband of Grace Stewart Smith, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Marion County Medical Center after an illness. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 16, in Cedardale Cemetery, with the Rev. Holton Siegling officiating. The services will be directed by COX-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME. Mr. Smith was born December 29, 1916, in Marion County, a son of the late H. Stacy and Adelle Smith. He attended schools in Mullins. Mr. Smith was an All-American halfback for The Citadel, from which he graduated in 1938. He served as Captain in the US Army during World War II. Mr. Smith’s business interests were Howard B. Smith Insurance Agency, Palmetto Hardwood, Inc., and agriculture. Surviving Mr. Smith in addition to his wife of the home are: a daughter, Sally Smith Culler; grandchildren, Gigi Smith DeLong, Stewart Smith Culler, Jacki Ann Smith, Salli White Smith and John Hayne Culler, Jr.; three great-grandchildren; and special friends, Lillie Ceo, Sallie Ceo, Constance Lewis, Janette Walker, John Watson Tart and Alfred Williams. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a son, Nat E. Butch Smith, Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the S.C. Tobacco Museum, 104 N.E.
