COLUMBIA (–) Services for Melvin St. John Commins, 57, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2001, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 845 Leesburg Road. The family will receive friends from 6-8 this evening at the funeral home. Mr. Commins donated his body to the USC School of Medicine. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Tennis Association, 170 Laurel Hurst Ave., Columbia, SC 29210 or the American Heart Association, 400 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29206. Mr. Commins died suddenly Sunday, July 29, 2001, on the court of a heart attack. He was looking forward to his team winning the City Championship next week. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry and Elsie Commons of Sumter. Mr. Commins was a graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter and a 1965 graduate of The Citadel. He had formerly worked at Williams Furniture in Sumter, CC McGregor CPA Firm and the S.C. Auditors Office. At the time of his death he was Senior Assistant State Treasurer in the S.C. State Treasurer’s Office and was Treasurer of the S.C. Tennis Association. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Dobbs Commins of Columbia; children, Capt. John Everington Commins, USAF of Tucson, Ariz., Christine Hunter Commins of York, Pa.; stepchildren, Matthew Glen Dobbs, Dale Dobbs Slagel, David Ward Dobbs, all of Selma, Ala., James Edward Dobbs IV and Nancy Dobbs Wilk all of Columbia and their spouses; 13 grandchildren.
