Mary Alma Hodges Crosland, of Mt. Pleasant, was born February 8, 1932 in Kingstree, South Carolina. She was the daughter and only child of William Henry and Celeste Patterson Hodges. She graduated from Kingstree High School in 1948 and she attended St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Miss Crosland later transferred to the University of South Carolina where she was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority and graduated in 1952. She married Malcolm McLaurin Crosland of Charleston in 1955, and lived in Texas and West Germany during his military service. They returned to Charleston and settled in Mt. Pleasant. While raising her two children, Mrs. Crosland taught children with special needs for the Charleston County School District and obtained a Master’s degree in Education from The Citadel. She was also a licensed independent tour guide for the City of Charleston and enjoyed sharing her deep love of history and Charleston with visitors from around the world. Always active in her spare time, Mrs. Crosland was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Garden Club, Charleston County Democratic Women’s Club, and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She was also a dedicated volunteer for Historic Charleston Foundation, The Preservation Society, Spoleto and other art and cultural organizations. Mrs. Crosland is survived by one daughter, Lorraine M. Crosland; son, Malcolm M. Crosland, Jr. and his wife, Meggett B. Lavin and one grandson, Elliott M. Crosland. Visitation for family and friends will be at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL from five until seven o’clock on Tuesday. A graveside funeral service will be held at St. Stephen Episcopal Churchyard in St. Stephen, South Carolina Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at eleven o’clock.
