Retired Army Col. Martin W. “Marty” Sargent, 71, Sheffield Road, died at 4:35 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at his home following a brief illness. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Hussung officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-West. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was born Jan. 28, 1943, the son of the late Dr. Carlton Willard Sargent and Marjorie Alfredia Martin Sargent. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 28 years. He graduated from the Citadel and served in Vietnam. He received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal. While in the military, he focused on health care administration and facilities planning. After he retired from the Army, he served as the vice president of operations at BMAR and Associates, from which he retired in 2011. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church, where he had been a Sunday school teacher and treasurer. He was a Gideon and a former member of the Hopkinsville Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, E. Carrol Sargent; his son, R.T. Fooshee, Hopkinsville; his sister, Mrs. Roy D. (Jacque S.) Miller, Abingdon, Md.; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
