Marion Leroy “Mickey” Burn, Jr. died Tuesday, September 16, 2008. He was born July 1st, 1927 the second born child of Marion Leroy Skipper and Esther Alberta Bert Burn. He began his life in Brunswick, Ga. and remained there until the age of 6, and then moved to Southport, N.C., where he spent several years. His parents later moved to Miami for a year and then settled in Charleston, S.C., where he attended the Citadel at the age of 16 and graduated in 1948. He was then stationed in Tokyo, Japan and then deployed to Korea when the Korean conflict began. He was wounded in Korea and returned to Japan to recuperate until 1952. He was then stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga. in 1953. He met his wife, Frances Ganusko at Ft. Benning, Ga. and after a yearlong courtship they were married in December 5, 1953. They had three boys, and were then stationed in Germany where they had their daughter. Mickey’s military career spanned 22 years from 1949-1971. He served in both the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War and was awarded numerous citations including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He retired from the military in 1971; moved to Southport, N.C., where he taught the 8th grade for one year. The next year he was given the position of Elementary school principal and retired from that position in 1983. He is survived by Frances, his loving wife of 54 years and his children, Marion Leroy Burn III, Robert Ashley Burn, Richard Arthur Burn and Elizabeth Burn Philemon, 11 grandchildren, Rosemary Burn, Ashley Burn, Courtney Gratzer, Melissa Burn, Katie Burn, Taylor Philemon, Ellie Philemon, Lauren Cirini, Michael Burn, Shane Burn and Joshua Burn and two Great grandchildren, Austin Gratzer and Dhane Hargroder. Michael Wade Philemon Jr precedes him in death. Son, Soldier, Teacher, Statesman, Husband, Father. All these words describe Mickey; however they do not encompass him. Mickey was loved by many, and all that knew him respected him as a man of great integrity. Mickey was often heard to say that when someone dies it’s as though a library closes. His wealth of knowledge and morals will not be lost to his passing, as he instilled them in everyone he knew and loved. We will all be better for having known, loved and learned from him. He lives in all of us and will be a constant reminder of all that is good and decent. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Leroy Burn are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 10:00 AM Friday, September 19, 2008 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-1942. Arrangements by JAMES A. McALISTER, INC., 766-1365.
