On the evening of January 18, 2016, surrounded by family, Marianne A. Mikell, of Beaufort, passed away at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA after a courageous battle with cancer. Marianne was 69 years old. Marianne Andrews Mikell was born in Augusta, GA on October 26, 1946. She was the oldest child of Col. William Capers Andrews, Jr. and Mary Catherine McElmurray Andrews. During her childhood, Marianne lived in Augusta, Birmingham, AL, and Savannah, GA. She earned a BA degree in Business Management from Vanderbilt University in 1968 and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Mathematics from The Citadel in 1971. Marianne moved to Beaufort, SC in 1984 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was deeply involved in her community and touched many hearts in the Lowcountry. She taught mathematics at Beaufort High School for 15 years and is fondly remembered by her students for her love and devotion to education as well as her tendency to zip around the classroom on her Harley-Davidson rolling stool. She was a congregant and choir member at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, served as the Chairman of the Board for the Rape Crisis Center, as a board member of the Child Abuse Prevention Association, as a member of the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and was involved in numerous other charitable and social organizations including the Historic Beaufort Foundation, Girl Scouts of America, Palmetto Garden Club, and The Birthday Club. Marianne had a unique and brilliant mind, able to appreciate the logic and order of mathematics but also the beauty of the arts and humanities. She was a masterful flower arranger, an avid reader, and a connoisseur of fine food and drink. She was known to trade her culinary expertise and incomparable skills as a hostess in return for a glass or two of wine but had no patience for either cheap wine or wine that she deemed too expensive. As those who knew and loved her are well aware, there are two ways to do anything: Marianne’s way and the wrong way. Marianne is survived by her children, Susan (Chris) Brake and Helen Miller; grandchildren Liam Brake, Townsend Mikell, and Callan Brake; sisters Susan (Lee) Nall and Nan (Harry) Hopkins; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Marianne was preceded in death by her son, Cpt. Brandon Mikell, US Army. A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Friday, January 22, at Sea Island Presbyterian church; 81 Lady’s Island Dr, Beaufort, SC. A visitation and reception will be held from 12pm-2pm on Saturday, January 23, at Platt’s Funeral Home; 337 N. Belair Rd, Evans, GA. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at 2:30pm at Westover Memorial Park Cemetery; 2601 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA. The family hopes that those able to attend will join us in celebrating Marianne’s life. Donations on Marianne’s behalf are appreciated. Hope Haven of the Lowcountry, 1212 Charles St, Beaufort, SC, 29902 or Lymphoma Research Foundation, 115 Broadway, Suite 1301, New York, NY, 10006.
