Lovick C. Evans, ’81

Lovick Claiborne Evans, 65, of Lavonia, Ga., ordered an aged scotch and took his seat at the 19th hole on June 23, 2025. Named after his maternal grandfather, Lovick lived a life as unique as his name. Everyone ALWAYS knew when Lovick was around-his commanding presence and unmistakable voice made sure of that. He was his own boss in life-until he met Nancy. They married in 1984 and, from that point on, shared the spotlight together.

Lovick graduated from The Citadel, Delta company, in 1981. He went on to earn his Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in civil engineering, as well as his Registered Land Surveyor license. It wasn’t long before he founded his own company, LCE Engineers, from the attic space above the family garage in Roswell, GA. He would joke that he had so many clients, he spent his days picking fleas off the cat. But in reality, he built and grew a respected company that thrived for over 30 years.

The Evans household had always been chaotic and loud, but it was amplified exponentially with the birth of daughters Katherine and Rachel in the early 1990s. Nancy had her hands full by raising the three of them. As a family, they traveled the world together – from snow ski trips out West, to sailing through the Caribbean, to staying in a castle nestled in the Irish countryside. Any time an opportunity for a trip arose, (or a travel mishap occurred), Lovick could be heard saying “Hey, we’re on an Adventure!”

Lovick had a passion for gardening his seasonal vegetables, boating and water skiing on the lake, woodturning bowls and sculptures, tackling home improvement projects, and grilling out and creating new recipes. But above all, he loved being down in the islands-somewhere on a beach, sipping something strong, and soaking in the sounds of steel drums and coquis.

In 2021, Lovick and Nancy retired to their home on Lake Hartwell, a peaceful retreat away from city life, where they could eat, drink and be merry. Lovick loved entertaining family, lifelong friends, new neighbors, and any fellow golf-lover like himself. He affectionately referred to the area as “Hooterville” because of how remote it felt. Even the family’s weekly Friday night Mexican was now a 30 minute drive!

Through Lovick’s life, he recognized relationships were the salt of life. He mentored others every chance he had. He also never missed a chance to tell everyone how proud he was of his daughters, or what they did for a living.

Always headstrong, some might even say hard-headed, Lovick took on brain cancer and fought it to his last breath. His final days were spent surrounded by family at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Special gratitude to the dedicated professionals there for their compassion and care.

Lovick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Drews Evans; his daughters and their husbands-Katherine Evans and Blake Travis of Atlanta, GA, and Rachel and Jake Marino of Port Orchard, WA; his two brothers, Phillip Evans and wife Melinda of Woodstock, GA, and Samuel Evans III of North Charleston, SC. He is also survived by a distinct group of cousins, lifelong friends from The Citadel, an extraordinary number of individuals in the engineering profession, and the absolute best friends from their days in Atlanta to the newest ones in “Hooterville!” He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel Evans Jr. and Jean Evans.

A celebration of Lovick’s life will be held at the Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell, GA on Saturday, July 12. The venue will open at 4:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 4:30 p.m. A reception will follow immediately afterward. In true fashion, Hawaiian shirts and Citadel blue attire are encouraged. Lovick will surely be there in spirit, sipping his scotch and taking names… probably for a golf outing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hart County Botanical Garden through hartcogardens.com (click on Support the Gardens and include In memory of Lovick Evans in the Dedicate this Gift box), or the Citadel Engineering school through foundation.citadel.edu.
