Dr. Louis Edward Nesmith, 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Hospice Center of Charleston. Born in Lake City, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Louis E. Nesmith and Verne Floyd Nesmith. He was the descendant of the four Nesmith brothers who were the body guards of the Revolutionary War General, Francis Marion. Dr. Nesmith was a 1940 Citadel Military College graduate where he was First Lieutenant of Company F, a member of the Summerall Guards, Glee Club, and Pre-Medical Society. He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1943 and interned at Roper Hospital in 1944. His medical college class was unique in that the students graduated in three years to provide military service during World War II. Dr. Nesmith served as a Captain in the United States Medical Corps for two years and completed a residency in General Surgery at Charleston General Hospital, Charleston, West Virginia. Upon discharge from the army, Dr. Nesmith entered General Practice in McColl, South Carolina where he met and married the former Martha Boggan Pence. They were married for sixty-one years. The couple moved to Laurenburg, North Carolina where he continued a General Practice. Returning to Charleston, South Carolina in 1955, he completed a three year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology where he practiced in this field for thirty years. He was the first doctor in Charleston to perform laproscopic surgery. Dr. Nesmith was a member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Society of South Carolina, Charleston Medical Society, Medical Journal Club, a past President and member of the Pee Dee Medical Society, and also a Member of the Charleston Chapter of the Rotary International Club. He was a member and deacon of Ashley River Baptist Church where he was in the Robert W. Major Fellowship class and the Senior Adult Choir. Dr. Nesmith spent much of his retirement at Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Surviving, in addition to his wife; are an aunt, Sally Schwartz; daughters, Martha Bonner and her husband, Frank Logan Bonner, of Charleston, Dr. Sally Ann Nesmith of Charleston and Susan Lazur and her husband, Andrew Martin Lazur, of Cambridge, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Sally McClary Wallace and her husband, Bruce Wallace, Martha Collet Stullenbarger and her husband, Shawn Stullenbarger, Dr. Mary Collet Drach and her husband, Lt. Commander Justin Drach, Jay Collet, Will Hare, David Hare and Katie Lazur Doyle and her husband, Jonathan Doyle; and five great-grandchildren, Coleman, Ben, Luke and Meg Wallace and Logan Stullenbarger. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, December 21, 2009, between three and five o’clock at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston.
