Lawton Rutledge (L.R.) Connor of Eutawville, South Carolina died December 19, 2008 after an extended illness. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Bethlehem Southern Methodist Church Cemetery near Holly Hill. Visitation will begin at 2 o’clock Sunday at AVINGER FUNERAL HOME, HOLLY HILL. Mr. Connor was born November 1, 1934 at Walnut Grove Plantation in Eutawville, South Carolina, a son of the late Fred Connor, Sr. and the late Rose Taylor Connor. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Connor, Jr., and is survived by two sisters, Lieze Connor McDaniel of Florence and Rose Connor Blackstone of Columbia; and devoted and faithful caregiver Emily Broughton. He graduated from Wofford College in 1956 and received a Master’s in Education from The Citadel in 1978. He taught at Holly Hill Academy and was a member of the original Board of Directors there. He taught at Wade Hampton Academy in Orangeburg where he was head teacher of the lower school. He remained with the system when Wade Hampton merged with Willington to form Orangeburg Preparatory Schools, Inc., where he was the Assistant Administrator. In 1977 Connor received the Freedoms Foundation Scholarship Award. He also served as President of the Lions Club in Holly Hill.
