Lawrence William Moon, Jr., 77, of Columbia, Tenn., passed away Thursday, May 14, 2020 at NHC Maury Transitional Care after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Stephen McCollum officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Presbyterian Churchyard. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home.

Larry was the son of the late Lawrence William Moon, Sr. and the late Nancy Sparks Moon. Larry was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent his adolescences in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and Tulane Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Before beginning his 40-year career as a federal attorney, he had a private law practice in New Orleans. Larry spent time working the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Justice. After retiring from federal service, Mr. Moon ended his legal career in the Public Defender’s Office.
Survivors include his son, William Clark Moon, and his fiancé, Julie Shelton, of Mt. Pleasant; daughter, Bennett Rebecca Moon, of Athens, Georgia; and mother of his children, Rebecca “Becky” Moon, of Columbia.
Active pallbearers will be Sam Kennedy, III, Travis Jones, Delk Kennedy, and Buck Young. Honorary pallbearers include Howard Parker, Gerry Bertinot, Charlie Griffin, Wayne Edmonson, Rusty Vest and Dr. J. Cummins Couch.
