Lawrence Derrick “Larry” Connor Junior passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina after a four-week critical illness. He was born in Wilmington, NC on February 11, 1925 the son of the late Lawrence Derrick Connor, Senior and Ada Evelyn Binnicker Connor. As a young man, his family moved to the Charleston, SC area. Mr. Connor was a veteran of the U. S. Army-Air Force serving during World War II and the U. S. Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he attended the Citadel Military College of South Carolina, graduating as first honor graduate of his Class of 1957. He received a masters of Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career carried him to a number of cities, Charleston, SC, Rock Island, IL, Augusta, GA, Weirton, WV and Burlington, NC. He retired from the City of Burlington where he served as Director of Planning for 15 years and as assistant to the City Manager for six years. Mr. Connor was a member of The Church of the Holy Comforter where he served as Junior Warden, Senior Warden, Lay Reader and was very active in the improvements and maintenance of the church building and grounds. He was a member of the Master Gardeners, the 50 Plus Golf Association and the Alamance Senior Golf Association and a charter member and treasurer of the Alamance Seniors’ Men’s Association. He was a past member of the Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Sharp Connor of the home; his son, Lawrence W. Connor and wife, Gail of Moncks Corner, SC; three daughters, Karen Connor Gallo and husband, Patrick of Liberty, SC, Pamela Connor Cooke and husband, David of Greensboro, NC and Sandra Connor Hightower and husband, Art of Mt. Pleasant, SC; nine grandchildren, Bonnie Connor Brewer, Sondra Connor Meddinger, Christopher Connor, Lawrence Connor, III, Arthur Hightower, Jr., Daniel Hightower, Erin Cooke, Jason Cooke and Kelley Nicole Gallo; five great-grandchildren, Amanda Brewer, Brittney Brewer, Carly Brewer, Alexis Myers and Hunter Meddinger a special niece, Susan Connor of Clayton, NC; a special nephew, Alan Connor of Raleigh, NC; three sisters, Ida Connor Woods of Charleston, SC, Cynthia Kaiser of Greenville, SC and Joanne Mellard of St. George, SC; a brother, Donald Connor of Tennessee; and a sister-in-law, Bertie Connor of Dorchester, SC. He is preceded in death by Inman Connor of Charleston, SC and John Connor of Dorchester, SC. The funeral service will be conducted at The Church of the Holy Comforter on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. David Williams and Rev. Rod Reinecke. Burial will follow in the church memorial garden. The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Tuesday from 6 until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of the Holy Comforter, P.O.
