Major (Ret. U.S. Marines) Julian Arby Moore, Jr., 90, of Sumter, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026.
He was born on November 23, 1935, in Manning, South Carolina, the only child of the late Edna Harrington Moore Johnson and the late Julian Arby Moore, Sr.
He was a 1953 graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC and a 1957 graduate of The Citadel. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps following graduation. He served a distinguished 20-year career as a communications officer in the Marine Corps, including service in the Vietnam Conflict, retiring as Major. He received several military commendation medals. Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, he moved back to Sumter and earned an MBA from Golden Gate University. He continued his career with the SC State government serving as the Network Operations Manager until he retired.
He was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather. He coached many little league baseball teams and was a volunteer YMCA Indian guide for youth.
Julian was a devout follower and faithful servant of the Lord. He was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church Sumter serving as deacon, elder, clerk of the session, pastor nominating committee member, Sunday school teacher and President of the Bethany Sunday school class.
He was also a member of the Sumter Kiwanis Club. Volunteering for various club sponsored activities. He loved to play golf in his younger days, participating in the Godfathers group at Sunset Country Club. Most recently he enjoyed participating in the Mount Vernon coffee club, the Guignard breakfast club and the Sumter touchdown club.
Julian never knew a stranger, always engaging with those around him. He loved to reminisce, tell jokes and always had a story that you may have heard more than once.
He is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Lois Barber Moore, and their 2 children: Michael Moore of Sumter, and Susan M. Burhans (George) of Conelius, NC and their 2 granddaughters: Emily and Julia Burhans of Cornelius.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Stewart Rawson officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service with a reception in the church fellowship Hall.
Inurnment will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors, at a later date.
