DETYENS, Joseph Entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 28,2004, Mr. Joseph Walker Detyens, husband of Barbara Runey Detyens, of Cainhoy, SC. Mr. Detyens was born in Charleston on June 27, 1933, a son of Hasford Walker Detyens and Annette Sullivan Detyens. He graduated from St. Andrew’s High School, class of 1951 and from the Citadel in 1955 where he was a member of the Summerall Guard. He honorably served his country for twenty years,achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel in the United States Army and retired after a distinguished career. Mr. Detyens received numerous awards including two Legion of Merit Awards and the Bronze Star. He served two tours in Vietnam and received four Air Medal Awards for Combat Flights. Mr. Detyens was the Program Director for the Charleston County Bicentennial Committee, an Administrator for Detyens Enterprises and the Community Manager for Crowfield Plantation. Included among his many civic activities he served as chairman of the Trident Fishing Tournament, a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conservation Association serving as State Vice President as well as a Board member. He helped organize the Fishing for Miracles tournament and served as its’ Chairman. Mr. Detyens was an early sponsor of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition and a member of the Purple Martin Conservation Society . He received the Medical University of South Carolina’s Children’s Hospital Fund Award as well as the Order of the Palmetto. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, his mother of Charleston , a son, Joseph W. Detyens , Jr. of Richmond, Va. three daughters, Joan Marie Detyens of Charleston, Ann Detyens and her husband Pete Mulvey of Mt. Pleasant, Debbie D. Pitts and her husband Carl of Wellington, Fl. and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Carl and Christina Pitts, Madeline Detyens and Garrett Mulvey. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walker Detyens are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Christ Our King Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the JAMES A. MCALISTER FUNERAL HOME 1620 SAVANNAH HWY. this Friday evening between 5:00 and 8:00 PM.
