Joseph T. Maloney, Jr., ’51

Joseph Thomas Maloney Jr., a native of Fayetteville, NC, was born on July 19, 1929. He passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012, at The Carolina Inn at Village Green. He was a 1947 graduate of Fayetteville Senior High School and he attended and graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. in 1951 with a degree in business administration. Following his graduation from college, Mr. Maloney was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served on active duty as an infantry officer with honor during the Korean War, earning several awards and citations, including the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the U.N. Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Later in his military career, he was an honor graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Texas. Mr. Maloney retired from active reserve as a lieutenant colonel in 1979. After he came home from the Korean War in 1953, he joined M and O Chevrolet Co., serving as a partner and ultimately as its president from 1979 to 1984 and retired in 1984. Mr. Maloney had been very active in civic offices and community involvements. A recipient of the Coveted Realtor Cup for Community Service, he was also recognized as “Man of the Year” by the Fayetteville area Chamber of Commerce. He has held many key leadership positions in a wide variety of organizations including President of the Cumberland County Unit of the American Cancer Society, President of the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg Reserve Officers Association, Chairman of the USO Council, Chairman of the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg Army Advisory Council, Director of the Southeastern Speech and Hearing Clinic, Secretary of the Exchange Club, local Board of Directors with First Citizens Bank and Trust Co. In 1976, Mr. Maloney became a member of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank and Trust Co. and its parent holding company First Citizens Bank Shares Inc. in Raleigh. He followed in the footsteps of his father who had been a member before his retirement from the board. Mr. Maloney served on the nominating committee and the trust committee of the board serving as chairman of the trust committee since 2003 until his retirement in 2007. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years Toaksie Tucker Maloney of the home; and his first cousins, Mrs. Isabel T. Patterson of Fayetteville, Mrs. Jack T. Benning of Asheville, Miss Mary Coit Tillinghast of Fayetteville, and Mrs. Helen T. McNeill of Fayetteville. Mr. Maloney, a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church was a generous supporter of his church and of the Catholic School. He served also as a lector at Mass for several years. The family would like to thank Doris Roundtree, The Carolina Inn, Community Hospice, Home Instead Senior Care, especially Linda Thompson, and Helping Hand Home Care for their compassion care. Memorials may be made to the new church building fund campaign at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 2822 Village Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304, or to Cumberland Community Foundation, P.O. Box 2345, Fayetteville, NC 28302, or to a charity of one’s choice . The family will receive friends at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Mass services will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Shugrue officiating. Interment will follow with the rendering of full military honors at Lafayette Memorial Park. Services entrusted to Rogers and Breece Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
