Joseph S. Bienstock, D.D.S., of Clearwater, Fla., passed away on July 17, 2022 at 95 years of age. Beloved husband of, and predeceased by, Phyllis (Rappeport) for over 57 years. Loving father of Michele Levin (Robert Marrazzo) and predeceased by Madge Bienstock. Cherished grandfather of Daniel Levin (Arielle), Laura Levin Schumacher (Christopher), and Sarah Levin. Dr. Bienstock, a well-known oral and maxillofacial surgeon, was raised in Brooklyn, NY. He attended The Citadel and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of Pennsylvania and after completing his residency at The Graduate School of Medicine there, became Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Bienstock practiced in New York City for several years, and then moved to the Philadelphia area where he established a successful oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty practice. Bienstock served as the Chief of Oral Surgery at multiple hospitals in the greater Philadelphia area including Rolling Hill Hospital, Einstein Hospital Northern Division, and Kensington and Olney Hospitals. He was Clinical Assistant Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Surgery at Temple University School of Dentistry. He served in many capacities in the Federation of Jewish Agencies, including as Oral Surgeon Chairman of the Allied Jewish Appeal, Dental Division. He served as the President of the Eastern Dental Society, the Philadelphia Society of Exodontists and Oral Surgeons, and the Greater Northeast Dental Society. Dr. Bienstock took pride in being a philanthropist, including establishing scholarships at The Citadel, the University of Pennsylvania for dental students, and generously donating to the Chabad of Clearwater, and other causes he believed in. A born leader, Dr. Bienstock served his community in numerous ways throughout his life, including providing weekly pro bono dental care to community members in need, serving on numerous professional boards and committees, and in later years, acting as the president of his condominium building as well as his retirement community. Joseph took great joy in the company of his family and they with him. Joseph’s favorite pastimes were travelling the world with his wife, Phyllis, reading, dancing, staying current with world events, technology, and medical advances, and eating a good steak. He was a healer, our patriarch, our advisor, a source of positive change for so many, and our hero. He lived life to the fullest and was an amazing example of a life well-lived. He will be missed and live forever in our hearts.
