Joseph Goodwin Maddox, Jr. of Atlanta and Cumming died on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, April 14, 2012. While recovering at home after lung transplant surgery, Joe suffered a pulmonary embolism and died suddenly but peacefully by the side of his beloved wife of 49 years, Janet. He was born in October 1941 at Ft. Jackson, SC, in a hospital built by his father on the post just prior to the outbreak of World War II. His parents were Joseph G. and Amelia Maddox. Joe was a loving father and grandfather, friend to many and an incredible man. Our treasured “Papa” was a strong man who in his lifetime survived polio, a tour in Vietnam, brain surgery and cancer. He was loved by many for his big heart, his booming “radio” voice and his skills to fix anything, but no one loved him more than Janet, his wife and best friend. His big personality could fill a room and will leave a huge void in our lives. After graduating from North Fulton High School in 1959 and The Citadel in 1963, Joe served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany and in Viet Nam. During a long career in the construction industry, he oversaw many interesting projects, including the Manufacturing Research Center at Georgia Tech, the original Dunwoody Village Shopping Center, parts of Phipps Plaza, a number of high rise apartments, hospitals and prisons, and most recently the DeKalb County Library Bond Projects. From 1993 to 1996, Joe oversaw the planning and construction of the International Broadcast Center for the Olympic Games, and then worked for NBC Olympic Broadcasting on both the Sydney Summer Olympic Games and the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games, for which his work was recognized with two Emmy awards. But it is as a husband, father, and grandfather that Joe is most fondly remembered. In addition to his wife Janet Harris Maddox, Joe is survived by his children Paula Maddox, her partner Loren Benson, and grandchildren Kira and Josh Burr, Brandon Renoe, and Kelsey Renoe; his daughter Tracy and husband TJ Hargen, and grandchildren Conor and William; his son Cole Maddox and wife Jennifer and grandchildren Sean, Evan and Katherine; his daughter Lindsay Coletta and partner Brian Scurr; his sister Mary Jo and husband Raleigh Powell; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
