JOHN WISE Funeral services for John Thomas Wise were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. Father Michael Ridgill and Father Richard Archer officiated with a private burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to Agape Hopsice of the Pee Dee, 202 S. Second Street, Hartsville, SC 29550. Mr. Wise died Saturday, Feb. 16. Born in Orangeburg, he was the son of the late George Chesley Wise and the late Mary Singleton Wise. John retired in 1989 from Sonoco Products Company where he was a chemist and research coordinator for 36 years. While at Sonoco, he was chairman of the paperboard committee of the testing division of TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry.) John also belonged to the CCTI (Composite Can & Tube Institute) and was largely responsible for helping to develop their test methods. He was a member of the American Chemical Society as well. He was active in several other civic affairs serving as president of the Memorial Library Association and the Lions Club. John received his B.S. from The Citadel and his M.S. in chemistry from Purdue University. He spent two years in the Army during the Korean War, serving in a surgical research unit and working with burn victims from all over the U.S. John’s strong faith and gift of service was evident to all who knew him. He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, where he served as junior warden, vestryman, lay reader and treasurer. He served on numerous diocesan committees and boards. He was lay leader for Cursillo and Kairos weekends and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. John was truly a man of God and touched many hearts and lives through the years. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Wise; his children, John Thomas Wise Jr. of Johns Island, Diane Wise of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Wise McCarley and son-in-law, Burton E. McCarley of Hartsville. He was the beloved "Pop" to 12 grandchildren, Chris and Jordan Lay of Charlotte, N.C., and Shon, Morgan, Mary Kate, Elizabeth, Martha, Ian, Anna, James, Caleb and Patrick McCarley of Hartsville.
