John Thomas Rouse III (known to all as Tom), age 90, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away on March 27th, 2024. Born on January 28, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida, to John T. Rouse, Jr., and Grace K. Rouse, Tom’s life was one of dedication, service, and joy.
Tom, graduated from the Citadel in 1956, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in the United States Air Force. His passion for flying was ignited at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, where he first piloted a T-33 single engine jet. His military career took him to Homestead AFB, Otis AFB, Loring AFB, Hanscom AFB, Somerville, SC, and Warner Robbins, flying aircraft including the KC-97, KC-135, C-124, and C-141. Notably, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. John retired from the Air Force in 1994 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Throughout his service, he was recognized for his exceptional skill as a pilot, including receiving an award for maintaining a perfect safety record.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dawn S. Rouse; his parents, John T. Rouse, Jr., and Grace K. Rouse; his son, Howard Coggin Rouse; and his daughter, Elizabeth L. Robinson. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories with his children, John T. Rouse, IV, and Georgia Rice; his cherished dog, Blackie; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Sherron and David Rouse.
A man of faith, Tom grew up as a Methodist in Jacksonville, Florida and later attended the First Methodist Church in Snellville, GA. In his last years he became an active member of 12 Stone Church in Lawrenceville, GA. Beyond his military achievements, Tom was known for his quick wit, outstanding trumpet play, special way with animals, talent as a woodworker, and his beautiful singing voice, which he shared with many through the Decatur Civic Chorus.
Tom’s life journey took him across the globe, but it was his sense of humor, obsession with precision, love for his family, and charismatic charm that left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His legacy of service, laughter, and craftsmanship will be cherished and remembered by his friends, family, and those lucky enough to have crossed paths with him.
Tom will be interred June 7th, 2024 at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with full military honors.
