John S. McClelland, of Mobile, Ala., died March 7. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Ponnie was the youngest child of Louise Vass McClelland and Homer L. McClelland. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother, 1st Lt. Homer L. McClelland. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Peggy, his sister, Louise M. McClure, his two sons, John, jr. (Julie) and Willson (Louise), as well as six grandchildren, Julia M. Hoitink (Chris), Louise M. Collins (Neal), John S. McClelland, III (Caroline), Corinna M. Hill (Jep), Elizabeth M. Parnell (Patrick) and Hugh B. McClelland. He is also survived by six great grandchildren and several devoted nieces and nephews. A native Mobilian, he loved all of the customs of our city. A graduate of Murphy High School, he attended The Citadel and graduated from the University of Alabama. A proud member of “The Greatest Generation”, he served as a pilot with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a faithful member of Christ Church Cathedral where, over the years, he served as Junior Warden, Senior Warden and in several other capacities. Many community organizations benefited from his passionate involvement and volunteer activities. A great outdoorsman, he shared his love of the woods and the water with his children, grandchildren and many friends. He was a member of several mystic societies where he loved and shared the gift of friendship. Ponnie’s family is especially grateful for the care and kindness of his caregivers, Lois Anderson, Sally Barnes, Lydia Brown, Samyria Jackson, Doris Johnson, Diann Milsap, Annette Perkins and Melinda Turner. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019 at12:00 noon at Christ Church Cathedral. Visitation will be at 11:00.
