John Spencer Barber, Sr., 98, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away December 26, 2020. He was a devoted husband to Elizabeth Ann “Liz Ann” (Batson) Barber for 49 years. After Liz Ann’s passing, he was married to the former Nora Mae (Yates) Smith for 19 years, until she passed. He was a beloved father and is survived by his children, Martha McKibben, John Barber, Jr., and Laura Belflower, 3 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter.
Born and raised in Moultrie, Georgia, “Spencer” attended The Citadel until his entire class was called to WWII in their junior year. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1950 with an engineering degree and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he and Liz Ann raised their 3 children. They moved to Hattiesburg in 1973. John (Spencer) was active in both communities and a deacon and a Sunday school teacher with Liz Ann at both First Baptist Church, Knoxville and University Baptist Church, Hattiesburg. John and Nora later lived in Texas.
John Barber was a strong example to those around him of a life well lived. He will be missed.
