John Morgan Settle, Jr., of Charleston, husband of the late Beverly Ann Jackson Settle, entered into eternal rest on April 2, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. John M Settle, Jr. are invited to attend his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018 at St Philip’s Church. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception will be held at the residence of his daughter. The family will receive friends Thursday at J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. John was born on June 15, 1933, the only child of Dr. John Morgan Settle, Sr. and Kathrine Bickley Settle. He attended Porter Military Academy, graduated from The High School of Charleston in 1951 and graduated from The Citadel in 1955. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and entered Pre-Flight School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas. He completed Primary Flight School in Kinston, North Carolina, graduated from Basic Flight School and received his Wings in May, 1957. He entered Advanced All Weather Jet Fighter Interceptor School. When he graduated from this school, he remained in the Air Force as a Jet Fighter Interceptor Pilot assigned to the 76th F.I.S., flying the F-89 Scorpion. He left the Air Force in 1959 to return to Charleston. He began his banking career at Home Federal Savings and Loan of Charleston in 1959, becoming Chief Executive Officer, President and Managing Officer in 1977. After the Bank was sold in 1992, he helped start a new state chartered bank, Community FirstBank of Charleston, now CresCom Bank, and served as its first President. He held a number of positions in the banking industry, including serving on the South Carolina League of Savings Institution’s Board, Chairman of the South Carolina League of Savings Institutions, and representing South Carolina as a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. John’s many civic activities included serving as Chairman of the Charleston County March of Dimes, The United Way Budget Board, the United Way Fund Campaign, The College of Charleston Foundation Fund Drive, Colonial Commons and Ashley River Embankment Committee for the City of Charleston, the Charleston Development Board, Junior Achievement Fund Drive, Commissioners of Pilotage for the Port of Charleston, Charleston Development Board Foundation and Bishop Gadsden Development Committee; he was President of the Charleston Speech and Hearing Clinic, the United Way, Family Services of Charleston, Greater Charleston Safety Council, Ashley Hall School Board of Trustees, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Chapter of the Air Force Association; and he served as a member of the Charleston County Bicentennial Committee, Charleston Area Transportation Study Citizens Advisory Committee, Wadmalaw Land Planning Committee, Roper Foundation Board, Best Committee for Redevelopment of the Naval Base and Shipyard and The Citadel Trust. He was a member and past Commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club and the Sea Island Yacht Club and a member of the Agricultural Society. He was a member of St. Philip’s Church. John is survived by a son, John M. Settle III and his wife, Jill; a daughter, Elizabeth W. Settle and a son, Pearce W. Settle; his grandchildren, Legare, Rebecca, Eugenia, Ella Gray, John and Owens; his niece, Sally Holcombe Templeton; his sister-in-law, Carol Jackson Moore and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
