He left the Citadel to serve in the Army in Europe during WWII. In 2010 as a gift to his family, John wrote and published the story of his life. He chose the book title “That’s Happiness,” a quote that was the life-mantra of his beloved mother-in law, the late Elise Preston Morris more fondly known to so many as Mama. His message inside the book sums up his view of family, “A life Without Children Would Not Be Worth Living.” Additional survivors are his four sons and their wives, John III (Patricia), Larry (Anne), Preston, (Traci), and Morris (Amy) Moss, his eleven grandchildren, Madison Harper (Siobhan), Marc Harper (Tzara), Ash Moss, Brittany Moss Kruithof (Adam), Layton Moss, Mobley Moss Brandenburg (Ben), Daniel Moss (Aidan), Megan Moss, Hampton Moss, Carlee Moss, and John Patten Moss and two great-grandsons, Lucas Harper and Laurence Gransbury.
