John Kirby Lowe, Jr., of Columbus, Georgia, died in Atlanta on May 27, 2006. Born in Columbus in 1928, Mr. Lowe was the only child of Bessie Meggett Lowe and John Kirby Lowe, Sr.; both parents were originally from Mississippi. A graduate of Columbus High School, Columbus College and the University of Alabama External Degree Program, Mr. Lowe also attended the Citadel in Charleston and the University of Georgia Center in Columbus. He served in the U.S. Army (1947-1949), including a 32-month tour of duty in post-war Germany; he was in the Reserves until 1956. Over the years, Mr. Lowe held executive positions at several leading companies, such as Columbus Mills, Inc. and Swift Textiles, Inc., both of Columbus, and Linen Thread (Indian Head, Inc.) of Anniston, Alabama. The father of four daughters and four sons, Mr. Lowe is survived by all eight of his children and their families, including six grandchildren. His eight children are: Susan E. Lowe, Cumming, GA; John A. Lowe, Orlando, FL; William E. Lowe, Atlanta, GA and Los Angeles, CA; Eva M. Lowe, Atlanta, GA; Guy R. Lowe, Boston, MA; James W. Lowe, Los Angeles; Bessie Lowe Lamica, Cumming, GA; and Mary Lowe Mathis, Dawsonville, GA. Additionally, Mr. Lowe is survived by first cousin Billy D. McGee of Columbus and his wife, Mary Charles; and first cousin Elsie Saey of Mississippi and her husband, John. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Parkhill Cemetery, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. Arrangements by Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road, 706-563-2372.
