John F. Fleming, ’60

John Francis ‘Jack’ Fleming, 87, husband of Mary Alice Hunter Fleming, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at his beloved Edgewater Park home, where he lived for the past 77 years. The family will receive friends between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Online condolences may be made at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Jack was born on Christmas Day in 1929, at St. Francis Hospital in downtown Charleston, a son of the late W. Lloyd Fleming and Elizabeth Gatewood Brenner Fleming. He graduated from St. Andrews Parish High School in 1947 with the coveted General Excellence Award. He attended the College of Charleston until enlisting in the US Air Force for four years. Upon returning, he attended The Citadel and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1960. Jack began working at Westvaco and retired after 33 years, later returning as a consultant. He enjoyed fishing, playing tennis and going out for lunch at his favorite restaurants. He wrote songs and rhymes for the children and had funny names for everyone. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a loyal friend. He was well known for his light-hearted approach to life, his wit, and his humor. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Alice; daughter, Christine Fleming Sadler (Tom) and a son, John Francis Fleming, Jr. (Sandy). Preceding him in death was his youngest son, Brenner Scott Fleming. He was a proud grandfather (although he asked to be called, ‘Uncle Jack’) to eight grandchildren: Jessica, Hunter, Jordan, Amanda, Mackenzie, Mariah, Kyler and John III.; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2090 Executive Hall Rd., Ste. 130, Charleston, SC 29407 or to the Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER Funerals & Cremation (843)766-1365.
