John Carl Trimble, of Indianapolis, was born in Norfolk, VA, on August 12, 1955, the son of Robert G. Trimble and Barbara Schubert Trimble. John spent his early years in Bloomington and West Lafayette as his father pursued advanced degrees, resulting in the family’s move to Southern Indiana for his dad to teach at Hanover College. John had an idyllic childhood growing up with the Hanover campus as his playground. At Southwestern High School, he excelled in academics, band, and basketball, resulting in his recruitment to The Citadel in Charleston, SC. John spent the summers coaching at Hanover College Basketball Camp, and Coach John Collier invited him to play for Hanover College. He had enjoyed The Citadel, but returned to Indiana to complete his degree at Hanover, where he met the love of his life, Ann Wimsatt. After graduating from Hanover, John attended the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and graduated magna cum laude in 1981. John and Ann were married in August 1981, and their loving marriage lasted over four decades. During law school, John worked as an intern at the law firm of Lewis Wagner. After graduating, he spent 45 years with Lewis Wagner, which recently recognized his impact on the firm, his clients, and the legal profession by changing the firm’s name to Lewis Wagner & Trimble. John specialized in insurance coverage defense, professional liability, and mediation, and had a long career as a trial and appellate attorney. John was named an Indiana Super Lawyer for over 25 years, ten years as #1. He received dozens of career awards, including the IndyBar Luminary Award, the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Louis B. Potter Lifetime Professional Service Award, and the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel’s Lifetime Achievement Award. John was president of the Indianapolis Bar Association, Chair of DRI’s Judicial Task Force, President of the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, and led the Board of Visitors at IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He also enjoyed serving on the board of Storytelling Arts of Indiana. John demonstrated his love for Hanover by serving 25 years on the college’s Board of Trustees. In 2024, Governor Eric Holcomb awarded John a Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana’s highest honorary award. John’s many friends and colleagues knew him as an excellent attorney, mediator, mentor, and friend. His ability to tell a great story was only surpassed by his integrity and kindness. John was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Barbara Trimble. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann, his daughters Marie (Todd) Holvick, Laura (Brian) Elbogen, his sister Lisa (David) Actor, six loving grandchildren, and many adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was most proud of his enduring marriage to Ann and the successes of their daughters. John’s family thanks Dr. Nasser Hanna and his team at IU Health for their kindness and commitment to John’s care.
