James Watson “Jimmy” Daniel, 90, of Mullins, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 11, 2010. Mr. Daniel was born on November 29, 1920, the sixth of seven children, to the late William Henry II and Eva Bell Daniel. He was a graduate of Mullins High School and attended the Citadel as a member of the class of 1943. Jimmy left the Citadel at the end of his junior year and enrolled in flight school. He graduated as a Marine Corps pilot, whereupon he was assigned to fly dive bombers in the Pacific, seeing action in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. He left active service as a captain in the Marine Corps Reserve. After the war, Mr. Daniel returned to Mullins and married Vera Logan Craig. He entered into the family farming, warehouse and farm supply business, serving as Vice-President of Daniel Warehouse and W. H. Daniel Supply Company. Over the next half century, Mr. Daniel was involved in many civic and community activities, serving on the Mullins City Council for twenty-eight years, sixteen of which he served as Mayor Pro-Tem. He also served on the Board of Directors of Pee Dee Academy including one year as Chairman of the Board. He also served his community as a former member of the Mullins Hospital Board and the Board of Deacons at the First Baptist Church in Mullins. Perhaps his most enjoyable association was as a lifelong member of the Citadel Brigadier Club. There was no more enthusiastic supporter of the Citadel than Jimmy Daniel. He will always be remembered for his warm smile, positive attitude, and ever present cigar. He was a devoted husband and an adoring father and grandfather. Mr. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William H. Daniel, III, John Shipp Daniel, and Joe Caldwell Daniel, and three sisters, Hazel Daniel Green, Florence Daniel Harris, and Ellen Daniel McGee. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Vera “Mickie” Daniel; his sons, James Watson Daniel II and his wife Nancy of Woodstock, Georgia, Herbert Craig Daniel of Pawley’s Island, S.C.; a daughter, Claire Daniel “Sugie” Stout and her husband Willard of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; his grandchildren, Logan Elizabeth Stout, Willard Daniel Stout, and James Watson “Trey” Daniel III, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Sallie, Lillie, and Eric Ceo, George Graves, and the staffs of Professional Nursing Services and Shepherd Care Hospice for the devoted care that was given to their loved one. Memorials may be made to Mullins First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, S.C. or The Citadel, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, S.C. 29409.
