James Park “Jim” Williams, Sr., 72, of 616 Kingfisher Circle, passed away Monday evening, September 5, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Williams was born in Lindale on October 25, 1938, the son of the late Sharon Henry “Shag” Williams and Katherine Caperton Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Paula Gibbons Williams, on January 22, 2001, and by a brother, Charles S. Williams, Sr., on November 13, 1999. Mr. Williams attended Pepperell and Darlington Schools and was a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served for eight years. He was active in real estate, and was associated with Reese and Smallwood Real Estate Company. He served as president of the Rome Homebuilders Association and as vice-president of the Greater Rome Real Estate Board. He was a longtime member of the Rome Symphony Orchestra as a cellist for 38 years and also served on the Symphony Board of Directors. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was an Eagle Scout with Troup 6 in Lindale. Survivors include one son, James Park Williams, Jr., Atlanta; four daughters, Embree Williams Poole (Chris), Signal Mountain, TN, Rebekah Williams Tankersley (Stewart), Montgomery, AL, Leah Williams Hughes (Josh), Marietta, and Anne Williams Hoban (John), Rome; seven grandchildren, Madeline Poole, Collins Poole, Leah Poole, Stewart Tankersley, Jon Paul Tankersley, Evelyn Tankersley and Caroline Hughes; one brother, George C. Williams, Rome; one sister, Leah Williams Bounds (Tom), Charlotte, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Flannagan officiating. A private interment l be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the King Hall of the First Presbyterian Church following the memorial service.
