Lt. Col. James Park Smith, United States Army (Retired), age 88, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Greensboro, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Greene County, Georgia on November 18, 1920, he was the son of the late John Alexander Smith, Sr. and Hallie Park Smith. He graduated from Greensboro High School and The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He married the former Patricia “Pat” Moorhead from Greensboro, Georgia. He served his country in World War II and around the world during his 28-year Army career. When he retired from the military in 1970, they returned to Greensboro and then in December of 2004 moved to San Antonio, Texas to be close to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Along with his wife, Pat, he kept the records for the Greensboro City Cemetery Association for thirty-three years. He was the Mayor of the City of Greensboro, a member of the VFW Post 4259 and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Moorhead “Pat” Smith in March of 2006; and siblings, Hallie Gifkins and John Alexander “Red” Smith, Jr. He is survived by a daughter, Anne S. Roadman and her husband Charles H. “Chip” Roadman of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Katherine Percy of Dalton, Georgia; two grandsons, Charles Roadman III and his wife Julia of Austin, Texas and James Roadman and his wife Lexa of San Antonio, Texas; a great granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Roadman; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery with full military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be the Military Honor Guard.
