James Perrin Hammond, Jr. left our world on January 25, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, James Perrin Hammond and Julia Elizabeth League Hammond. Surviving are his son James Perrin Heartway (Jenni); his daughter Elizabeth O’Neill Hammond; his sister Betty Hammond Jenkins (Robert); grandchildren Cedar, Wren, Harvest and Pippi Heartway; nephew Robert Radford Jenkins, Jr. (Kyleigh), cousins Margaret Ulmer and G. Frank League, III (Barbara).
Born on October 28, 1940 Jim grew up in Greenville, SC. He graduated from Greenville High in 1958 and the Citadel in 1962. At the Citadel he received his Second Lieutenant commission and served in the US Army Artillery Division in Germany and South Korea.
After his tenure in the US army he entered the business world with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, NC. Later, as an entrepreneur, Jim created a sales enterprise representing textile and knitting equipment manufacturers.
Jim had three major passions: cars, shag dancing and the Carolina Cup. He was a lifelong collector of antique, exotic and limited edition foreign automobiles.
In 1967 Jim married Ann Marie Addington and for many years Jim and his family enjoyed spending time at their beach home at Sunset Beach, NC. He was an award winning shagger and a member of the Charlotte Shag Club. Ocean Drive was his “happy place” and he could always be found at the SOS celebrations there.
The Carolina Cup became a prioritized annual event. Jim became an active supporter of the cup in 1960 and over the past sixty-one years, Jim, along with his best friend Fred Ducker, attended the cup 59 times!
Jim’s ashes will be distributed at a later date at his beloved Ocean Drive, SC.
Condolences may be sent to his son:
