James Merrill Sturgeon Sturgeon – Born Nov. 18, 1920 in Denver, CO., died in Monterey on Tue. Sept. 19, 2006. As first Lieutenant in the Army, Mr. Sturgeon served in WWII in the South Pacific under General MacArthur, who was in the first wave of the landing at Leyte Gulf. He was a member of the 542nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. Later, he became a registered professional civil engineer and worked for California State Division of Highways (Cal-Trans) for 32 years. When he retired from Cal-Trans in 1978, he moved to Monterey in 1980. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjorie E. Sturgeon; his son, John H. Sturgeon of Paso Robles, CA; and his sister, Dr. Jane Zahn Edises of Prescott, AZ. In 1999, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Marilyn E. Rea. At the family’s request, no service will be held. Interment will take place at Monterey City Cemetery. Arrangements are directed by The Paul Mortuary.
