James M. Attaway, 83, of Beaufort, S.C. died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Mr. Attaway was born in Beaufort, S.C., a son of the late Herbert B. and Rena Marvin Attaway. James served his country in the United States Coast Guard during WWll and the Korean conflict. He graduated from The Citadel where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954. He taught in the public school system and at The Citadel until his retirement. After retirement, Mr. Attaway owned and operated Attaway-Coosaw Farms. He was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church. Mr. Attaway is predeceased by one brother, Herbert B. Attaway, Jr. and three sisters, Elizabeth Lipscomb, Laurie Attaway and Lois Parker. Survivors include his wife, Judith Steele Attaway of Gainesville, Florida; a sister, Jane Attaway Hanna and her husband Donald of Beaufort, S.C.; a devoted caregiver, Theresa Cruz of Coosaw Island; eighteen nieces and nephews, nineteen great-nieces and nephews, five great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. at the Port Royal United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in St. Helena’s Episcopal Church cemetery with military honors.
