Mr. Roberts died peacefully at home in his sleep September 25th at his home on Wrightsville Beach. Jim was born April 16, 1925, son of the late W.B. and Beulah Spivey Roberts of Tabor City. Jim, known as ‘Rock’ to his friends and colleagues, had a passion for flying. He entered the Citadel for one year, and then joined the Army Air Corps during World War II obtaining the rank of Captain. He later graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and was a member of the ATO fraternity. He returned there to raise his family. While in Chapel Hill, Jim was involved with many organizations including the Jaycees, Roosters, and Chapel Hill Rotary Club and served UNC by keeping statistics for many seasons of Tar Heel football. Jim owned and operated the original Hickory Farms in Chapel Hill and in 1974, he and his late wife, Carrie Maie moved to Wrightsville Beach. He was a charter member of, and retired from, Flotilla 10-01 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Jim was a long time employee of Raysand Building Corporation in Wilmington. He is survived by three children Dockery Roberts Durham and husband Eddie of Chapel Hill, daughter, Settle Roberts Womble and husband Eddie of Carboro, son, Jim Roberts, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Wilmington; eight grandchildren, Carrie Durham Knapp, Mary Hamlin Womble, Coy Edward Durham III, Virginia Fletcher Womble, Benjamin Wade Womble, James L. (Jay) Roberts III, Cole Gordinier Roberts, and Ellen Tate Roberts. Jim is also survived by several dear relatives whom he held close to his heart. A memorial service is planned for both Jim and wife Carrie Maie, Saturday, October 4th at 3:00 p.m. in St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington.
