James Ellerbe King, age 87,of Manning, beloved husband of 61 years to Peggy Creighton King, died on Monday, December 18, 2017 at McElveen Manor. Born in Manning, SC, he was the son of the late Dr. William Ralph King and Rea Hartwick King. Mr. King was a devoted husband and father. He was a Citadel graduate, where he was a member of the Prestigious Summerall Guards. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a division administrator for Land Air, Inc., in Chicago for five years until he retired to Manning to work as a cotton broker in his families’ business. He was the co-chairman of the Building Committee of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder for nine years. He accepted the title of Elder Emeritus when his health failed and he became a trustee. He served as the water commissioner for Clarendon County and served as a real estate broker. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and served as the secretary, treasurer, board of directors, President and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. King was also a member of the St. Peters Masonic Lodge. Surviving in addition to his wife Peggy are two sons, William Ralph King and James Ellebre King, Jr.; three grandchildren, James Ellebre King, III, Kendall Walker King and Robert Cannon King; one sister Rella Virginia King and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Govan King. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the New Covenant Presbyterian Church , Manning, SC with Rev. Jon Beane and Gordon Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hance Finley, Billy Geddings, James Hersey, Michael Hersey, Robert Hersey and Bob King. Honorary Pallbearers will be Billy Disher, Bob Finley and the Men of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 3:00 pm at the Church. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice or to the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, SC 29102.
