James Dalton “Jimmy” Galloway Jr. passed away peacefully at Westminster Towers, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived 95 full and meaningful years as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of the Rock Hill community.
Jimmy grew up locally and formed lifelong friendships and values during his early years. He played football and basketball for the Winthrop Training School and later graduated from The Citadel, where he was honored as a member of the prestigious Summerall Guards.
Following college, Jimmy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Panama during the Korean War. After returning home, he married the love of his life, Josephine “Feeny” Dunlap, in 1951. They shared 52 years of marriage marked by devotion, family, and faith until her passing in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Erika Coulson, who brought companionship and comfort later in his life.
Jimmy built an extraordinary 70-year career at First Insurance Agency, later Peoples First Insurance, where his dedication, integrity, and leadership became the foundation of a true family legacy. He took great pride in seeing his son Ben and grandson Zander follow in his footsteps, creating three generations committed to serving the Rock Hill community.
Service to others was woven through every chapter of Jimmy’s life. He served on the board of Rock Hill National Bank and was a longtime member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session, Moderator of Presbytery, and on multiple pulpit nominating committees. His commitment extended into the broader community as well-he served on American Red Cross Board of Directors, was President of the United Way, The Salvation Army Board, the YMCA Board, and the Rotary Club. He was also honored with the Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Business Achievement Award.
Jimmy was warm, steady, and selfless-a man of quiet strength who led by example. He was known for truly listening, for keeping his word, for showing up early, and for caring about others with genuine interest. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a presence that made people feel seen and valued.
He loved the outdoors-hunting, fishing, and golfing-and he treasured time with his family, especially in Montreat, a place of countless memories and gatherings. He also enjoyed traveling and remained active in his community well into his later years, still going into the office and spending precious time with those he loved.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James Dalton Galloway, Sr. and Marion Reames Galloway. He is survived by his children, James “Ben” Galloway (Lisa) and Elizabeth Galloway; his grandsons Alexander “Zander” Galloway (Tamara) and William Galloway (Jillian); and his great-grandchildren Dalton, Graham, Hayden, Allison, and Chloe. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was lovingly known as “Uh Oh,” a name spoken with deep affection. He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Quattlebaum. He maintained a warm relationship with Erika’s son, Coy Coulson, and his wife, Jodie, who were an important part of his extended family.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Westminster Towers and to Interim Hospice for their compassionate care.
A service celebrating Jimmy’s life will be held on Sunday, December 7th at 2:00 PM at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC, 29730. The family will greet friends following the service.
