James Barney Sumler, of Blythewood, died Sept. 5, 2020. The son of Albert George and Ola Inez Sumler, he was born on April 27, 1940 in Lakeland, Georgia. He grew up on James Island, near Charleston South Carolina where he graduated from the Citadel military college. James is survived by his wife and true love of 58 years, Katie Sumler, their two loving daughters Dawn Moore and Paige Rew, and his two sons-in-law Fred Rew and Matt Moore, both loved and cherished by them as if their own. For the past 28 years, James has been surrounded by his adoring grandchildren James, Will, Mark, & Elizabeth Rew and Matthew & Katie Paige Moore. James served in the United States Army beginning his military career as Harbor Master in Okinawa, Japan. He continued as an Army aviator where he flew UH-1 ‘Huey’ helicopters becoming a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war earning the Air Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in battle. James retired from the Army at the rank of Major. Following his military service, James went on to earn two master’s degrees and began teaching business at the college level. Near the retirement of his teaching career, James, with Katie by his side, spent 4 years hand building their dream home in Blythewood, SC where his children and grandchildren all grew up making lifelong precious memories. James is now peacefully resting in the garden with his grandson Will watching over all who love and adore them both.
