J. Harmann Pieper ’54

Lt. Col. J. Harmann Pieper, of Charleston, formerly of Tradd St., died on March 28, 2008 at Savannah Grace at The Palms of Mt. Pleasant. He was born in Charleston on December 30, 1932, the son of John Harmann Pieper and Margaret Christian Pieper. A great-great grandson of Confederate General Johann Andreas Wagener, former mayor of Charleston and founder of Walhalla, SC, he was a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Lt. Col. Pieper was in the process of applying for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution based on the service of his great-great-great-great grandfather, Samuel Byrd, in Roebuck’s Regiment before and after the fall of Charleston. Samuel Byrd’s daughter Elizabeth married William Veronee, who was a direct line ancestor of Harmann’s paternal grandmother, Albertine Veronee Pieper. A 1954 Citadel graduate, he retired from the faculty as a emeritus associate professor in 1991, after teaching in the Modern Languages Department for 29 years. In 1984, he received one of the Outstanding Teaching Awards given annually by The Citadel. Lt. Col. Pieper served on many college committees, including two terms on the Faculty Council. During one of these, he was its secretary. He was N Company faculty advisor for 26 years and resumed this position with B Company as a volunteer in retirement. Lt. Col. Pieper was the faculty advisor to the Catholic Parish of Christ the Divine Teacher from 1974 until his retirement in 1991, and coordinated an exchange program between cadets and French students for a number of years in the 1970’s. He was also a retired Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel. Lt. Col. Pieper was an active member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, having served as its volunteer music librarian for 10 years, and also belonged to the Military Officers’ Association of America, the Alliance Francaise de Charleston, the Deutscher Bruderlicher Bund, the Charleston AFB Officers’ Club, the Societe Francaise de Bienfaisance, the German Friendly Society, the Palmetto Guard Society, and the Charleston Chapter of the SC Genealogical Society. He served as secretary of the General Wagener Memorial Committee. In addition, he was a member of The Citadel’s Brigadier Foundation and a life member of the Association of Citadel Men. He is survived by his closest and dearest friend, Mary Lou Brodie of Mt. Pleasant, nieces, Carol A. Doran and husband Curtis and Theresa A. Slaughter of Charleston, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Pieper Armstrong. Funeral arrangements are pending and will follow with MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME; DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, Carolina Hospice, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Citadel Class of 1954 Scholarship Fund. Condolences may be sent via www.mcalister-smith.com. McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, 150 Wentworth St. is serving the Pieper family. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
