J. Daniel Mullin ’74

Lieutenant Commander John Daniel “Dan” Mullin (US Navy Ret.), passed into eternal rest at the age of 93 on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the Hospice Center of Charleston. Services for Dan Mullin will be announced and held later this week by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Dan was born on May 8, 1915, son of the late Catherine Doherty Mullin and Alphonso Joseph Mullin of New York, New York. His prolific journey encompassed a variety of professional occupations. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the virtual destruction of the US Navy in the Pacific Hemisphere, Dan fought many battles aboard the John D. Ford [DD-228] a 4-Stacker Destroyer of the Asiatic Fleet. His naval service during this period would earn him a Bronze Star. His ship was the soul survivor of Destroyer Division 59. Following WWII, he was consultant for design of the next generation of Naval Destroyers. Dan retired from the Navy in 1957. In civilian employment, Dan worked as a designer for several firms in Massachusetts, as well as Charleston, SC after relocation in 1967. Dan was employed as a draftsman for Paulson Engineering, which was involved with the design of drill bits for the dredging of Charleston Harbor. Dan and Barbara Ann Mullin were the first President and Vice-President (respectively) of the Republican Party of Christ Church Parish #4. He remained active as a poll-watcher for the next twenty years. Dan taught industrial arts at Moncks Corner High School in 1970. After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Citadel in 1974, he taught at Laing Middle School in Mt Pleasant, SC. In his free time, Dan would coach little league baseball for the Mt. Pleasant Recreational Department. Following Paulson’s retirement in 1978, Dan began research for his Historical Narrative, Another Six-Hundred, the story of his and his shipmates’ experiences in the South Pacific Campaign. His book enjoys many accolades from the Naval Historical Center, Admiral Nimitz State Historical Park, U.S. Navy Magazine, Vice-Admiral William P. Mack and remains in the Department of the Navy, Naval Historical Center at Washington, DC as a source for Muster Lists and Battle Reports for Destroyer Division 59. In the 80’s, Dan started, and was President of U.S. Asiatic Fleet 4-Stacker Destroyers, Inc. a non-profit organization. He personally organized annual reunions of the survivors of the Asiatic Fleet and was instrumental in ensuring that these heroes received their honor and recognition earned through sacrifice. Lt. Cmdr. Mullin was preceded in death by his wife, Lieutenant J.G. Barbara Ann Mullin. After meeting at the Naval Base in Charleston, they were married in 1956. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Holliday of Chantilly, VA. and three sons, Daniel Wade Mullin, David John Mullin, and Kenneth Daniel Mullin, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Hospice of Charleston, “Hospice Center Fund,” 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 101, Charleston, SC 29405 or East Cooper Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 583, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29465. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
