John Benefield “Benny” Reeves, Sr., 78 years old, passed away Friday night, November 12, 2022, at

his home in Irmo, S.C. He was born on December 22, 1943, at his home in Allendale, S.C. He was the

second son and the youngest of eight children born to Percy Gooding Reeves, Sr. and Ruth Agnes

Ferguson.

Benny graduated from The Citadel on May 29, 1966, with a bachelor’s degree in business

administration. He served in the S.C. Army National Guard for eleven years as a Combat Engineer

stationed in Barnwell, S.C. He retired as the Deputy Director of Administrative Services for the S.C.

Department of Natural Resources on July 1, 2001, after thirty years of service.

Benny is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Sue McIrvin Reeves; daughter, Elizabeth Reeves

Daugherty of Little Rock, AR; son, John Benefield Reeves, Jr. and his wife, Charity Johnson Reeves of

Kannapolis, N.C.; four grandchildren: Jackson Cole Daugherty and Cailyn Elizabeth Daugherty of Little

Rock, AR, and Lucy Elizabeth Reeves and Charleston Gray Reeves of Kannapolis, N.C.; and three

sisters: Lydia Temperance “Taby” Reeves Keener, of Charleston, S.C., Mary Ruth Reeves Eaves of

Allendale, S.C., and Julia “Judy” Morel Reeves Phillips of Jacksonville, FL.

His magnetic personality and great sense of humor will be sorely missed. He loved college baseball

and college football and was adored by his grandchildren. “So also you have sorrow now, but I will

see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you” (John 16:22, ESV).

Graveside services will be at 2 pm, Wednesday, November 16 at Swallow Savannah Cemetery in

Allendale, S.C. The family will receive friends and family after the service. A memorial service will

be held at 2 pm, Thursday, November 17 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C. (5637
