Houston Francis “Dick” Crater, Jr. 74, of Gaffney passed away at his home on Saturday March 29, 2014. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Monday March 31, 2014 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home at Frederick Memorial Gardens, and all other times at 169 Woodview Drive. Services to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday April 1, 2014 at Buford Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Gene Curry and Reverend Scott Hammett officiating. Burial will follow at Frederick Memorial Gardens. Mr. Crater was born December 9, 1939 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Houston and Mary Phelps Crater. He was a 1963 graduate of The Citadel receiving a BS degree in Engineering. Mr. Crater was a hardworking, dedicated family man. He was devoted to his church, enjoying the many years he and his wife ran the youth group at Buford Street UMC. He was employed for 25 years at the Board of Public Works where he will be remembered for developing the Peachoid, which is a Gaffney landmark. An avid outdoorsman, Clemson Fan, member of IPTAY and a philanthropist. He served in many positions including: YMCA President, Founder of the Gaffney Ducks Unlimited Chapter, SC Quail Unlimited, SCAMPS, Past President Rotary International, Past President PMPA Board, Wachovia Board, SC Water Resource Commission, President of Chamber of Commerce, Assistant Manager of Greenwood Commissioners Public Works, and helped establish the Boykin Spaniel Society of SC. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Judy Fox Crater and three children: Chip Crater, Dawn Crater, and Christopher Crater. Those left to cherish his memory include his children; Fox Crater and wife Kris, Dixie Bullock and husband Will, Daisy Crater and J.T. Turner, six grandchildren; Jade Bullock, Allee Crater, Iris Bullock, Tyler Crater, Ro Bullock, Haley Crater and a brother; David Wayne Crater. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mr. Crater’s name to Buford Street United Methodist Church Daycare 120 E Buford St, Gaffney, SC, US, 29340 or Senior Centers Of Cherokee County Inc, 499 W Rutledge Ave, Gaffney, SC 29341.
