Henry Perry Dyches II, 79, of Houston, TX, passed away on Monday, June 22. Longtime friend Dennis Shaw said Dyches was an accomplished horseman, conversationalist, pianist and lifelong admirer of literature and opera and symphonies. Dyches, the son of Dr. H.P. Dyches and Viola Brosh Dyches, lost his mother before his first birthday and was sent to live with his aunt and uncle, Sadie and Tillman Dyches, whom he referred to as his parents for the rest of his life. Dyches attended Aiken High School then went to The Citadel in Charleston where he graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. During that time, he served as an aide to several prominent people like U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles Lindbergh. He moved to Texas with a commission as second lieutenant at Randolph Air Force Base, where he held a number of posts like flight commander and, more notably, protocol officer and aide to Maj. Gen. J.K. Lacey and to all foreign and domestic general officers and civilians visiting the base. Having come from Aiken, Shaw said Dyches was an experienced horseman, and he was a member of the U.S.A.F. Equestrian Team at Randolph. Dyches was released from the Air Force as a first lieutenant and moved to Mexico City, Mexico, where he furthered his college career. He graduated with an advanced degree in international studies. Shaw said Dyches lived in Mexico for a number of years and spent his time there studying the language, culture, politics and business. Later, while he was living in Houston, Texas, he began to write a book about Aiken. He compiled a 2,000-page manuscript and was still conducting research until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2000. Graveside funeral services with military honors for Mr. Henry Perry Dyches will take place on Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Cemetery with Fr. Grant Wiseman officiating. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. S.W. is assisting the Dyches family. Dyches, 79, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Aiken, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at Cornerstone Hospital in Houston. Additional obituary information will be published when available.
