Henry McClure DaVega Jr. LEXINGTON – A memorial service for Henry McClure DaVega, Jr. will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. DaVega died September 20, 2007, in the Presbyterian Home of S.C., Lexington. Born November 22, 1920, in Chester, he was the son of the late Henry McClure DaVega and Carrie Pool DaVega. At an early age, he moved with his family to Charlotte, N.C., where he was raised and educated, graduating from Central High School in 1938. In 1942 he graduated from The Citadel and married Susan Anderson Cochrane, also of Charlotte. As Captain DaVega, he served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery Unit in the European Theatre during WW II where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. At the end of the war the family moved to Columbia where he was the second-generation owner of Brookland Ice and Fuel Co. Mr. DaVega and his wife, Susan, were charter members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where he served as both elder and deacon. He was a member of Forest Lake Club and the Columbia Civitan Club which he served as president in 1952. He chaired the Steering Committee that raised the funds to build the Presbyterian Home in Lexington and later chaired the Board of Directors of that organization. His hobbies were woodworking, golf and reading. He was an avid gardener with a special interest in Bonsai plants. He was well known for his tireless devotion to his yard at his home of fifty years. The glorious spring display of massed plantings was enjoyed by many in his neighborhood. His example of a Christian life of integrity, self-discipline and devotion to others was his greatest gift to his family. Mr. DaVega is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Susan Cochrane DaVega; their daughters, Susanne Gibbins of Anniston, Ala., Ellen DaVega of Sullivan’s Island, Anita Rownd of Raleigh, N.C.; son, Michael DaVega of Columbia; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Gibbins Bumpious, Beth Gibbins White, Meg Gibbins Simonton, Anna Shealy Smith, Katherine Shealy Smith, Ellen Everett Shealy, Allison DaVega Rownd, Spencer McClure Rownd, Michael Buck DaVega, William Henry DaVega, and Jefferson West DaVega; and seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204.
