Henry D. Shaffer, Sr., 84, entered the kingdom of heaven on June 29, 2014. Born in Charleston, SC, of the late Walter L. and Erna H. Shaffer, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Anne R. Shaffer and a brother, Walter L. Shaffer, Jr. He is survived by two children, Henry D. Shaffer, Jr. (Skipper) and Susan E. Shaffer; and three grandchildren, Henry D. Shaffer III (Del), Richmond B. Shaffer and Stephanie Jo Shaffer; and one nephew, Walter L. Shaffer III (Lang). He graduated from St. Andrews High School and was a member of the class of 1950 from The Citadel. He wore the Citadel ring proudly and held together a group of his classmates, hosting a homecoming oyster roast for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving overseas in Germany in the aftermath of World War II. He lived on the Isle of Palms for over 50 years and was very active civically as a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept., The Exchange Club (a past president and Man of the Year) and served several terms on City Council. He was an active member of Isle of Palms First Methodist Church and served in the Men’s Club and various committees, including heading up the building committee for the enlargement of the sanctuary some years ago. He served as “Secret Santa” for the City of Isle of Palms to the delight of the island children and also for “Friends of Santa” where he served on the board of directors. He hosted an annual Fourth of July celebration for over 30 years that became world renowned, swelling to an attendance of around 150 islanders at its peak. It was an all-day affair, involving whole families and culminating with a pig-picking and BBQ dinner at the end of the day. He retired at age 62 after an illustrious career as Vice President of Real Estate Services for Unisun Insurance Company, formerly, American Mutual Fire Insurance. He didn’t stop there, working as a ranger on the Wild Dunes golf courses and making a family recipe of deviled crabs, which he shared with friends and family and became a menu favorite at “The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene” on Shem Creek. His final position was tending all the bird feeders at “The Palms.” You are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of life at Isle of Palms First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 2nd, at 1:00 p.m. with a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.
