Henderson was born in Bonneau, S.C. to the late Henderson Guerry, Sr. and Maude Morris Guerry, the only son of five children. Henderson or “HG”, as he was fondly referred to by family and friends, graduated from Berkley High School in 1950. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Citadel in 1954. After completing two years of military service in France as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Upon returning home in 1957, Henderson married Mae in Myrtle Beach and began their life together there and the start of his 30—plus year career with Santee Cooper Electric & Co-op. and SCE&G; ultimately settling home in Columbia. Henderson later went on to obtain his MBA degree from University of South Carolina.
Throughout the years, Henderson was involved in numerous professional, civic and charitable organizations – active in the Professional Engineers Society, both Columbia and South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, Carolina Children’s Home, United Methodist Church (including 30 years teaching Sunday School) and devoting many years delivering Meals on Wheels. Henderson was honored to receive many awards; in particular, he was voted “Young Man of the Year” of Myrtle Beach in 1961. Henderson was always athletic and enjoyed many sports, but most notably, playing handball for over 40 years.
Henderson was a true Gentleman! And without question, Henderson remained a loving and devoted son, brother (to his four dear sisters), husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was undoubtedly “Loved by All” who knew him. Henderson retired at age 62 and fulfilled his dream in 1992, building and opening “Lake Murray Golf Center”, which became the premier practice facility in the area with a Driving Range, 9—hole Par 3 Course and an 18—hole Miniature Golf — Something for everyone! Henderson received such joy and pleasure being able to socialize with customers and friends while working there over 20 years.
Henderson “HG” is survived by his wife Mae, son Michael Henderson Guerry, daughters Sarena Guerry Graczyk (Doug) and Cynthia Guerry Ames (Ken), four grandchildren Brandon and Brooke Graczyk and Morgan and Matthew Ames and his sister Andrea “Andy” Guerry Holler. He was predeceased by his other sisters Nina Guerry Cooper, Evelyn Guerry Orvin and JoAnne Guerry Watson.
