PEEPLES, Harrison SCOTIA, SC – Dr. Harrison L. Peeples, 88, died May 2, 2006, at his home. Dr. Peeples was born February 6, 1918, in Scotia, SC, the son of the late Marion Lee Peeples, MD, and Annie Mason Peeples. He was a graduate of Furman High School, The Citadel, and the University of Louisville, Kentucky, Medical School. He served as Captain in the US Army Medical Corps from 1943 through 1944. He practiced medicine in Hampton and neighboring counties for over 50 years. He served as President of the South Carolina Medical Association from 1979 to 1980. In 1980, he was named South Carolina Family Doctor of the Year and in that same year was named as one of the Top Ten Family Physicians in the United States by the American Academy of Family Physicians. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for over 28 years, and served as Chairman of that Board from 1970 through 1974. He had served as a member of South Carolina Higher Education Commission; as Vice Chairman of the Rural Health Foundation of Hampton County; member of the Board of Education of Hampton County; Delegate to American Medical Association; member of the Board of Visitors of Clemson University, and Founder of the Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University). He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Medical Science Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Lawtonville Baptist Church, where he had served as Deacon and Superintendent of the Adult Department Sunday School. He devoted his life in multiple endeavors designed to strengthen health care services in Hampton County and the state. He was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Lee Peeples, Jr., M.D. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Cleland Peeples, and their three daughters: Elizabeth P. Laffitte and her husband Henry S. Laffitte, of Allendale; Patricia P. Westmoreland, M.D., and her husband William T. Westmoreland, M.D., of Greenville; Brenda P. Batten and her husband Wise H. Batten of Estill. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Henry Spann Lafitte, Jr., and his wife Elizabeth Fraser Laffitte of Columbia; Elizabeth Harrison Laffitte of Atlanta, GA; William Harrison Westmoreland and Thomas Marion Westmoreland of Greenville; Lee Elizabeth Batten of Mt. Pleasant; and Wise H. Batten, Jr., of Estill; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Lawtonville Baptist Church in Estill, SC, on Friday, May 5, 2006, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. James F. Norris and Rev. Barney Tuten with interment following at Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill. The family will receive friends at their home in Scotia. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday after the services. The family would be happy to receive written remembrances of Dr. Peeples.
