Harold L. Shokes, 80, passed away peacefully Friday, February 6th, 2009 in his home after a brief illness surrounded by his family. Mr. Shokes was born in Charleston on February 28, 1928. He was a son of the late Harold L. Shokes, Sr. and the late Julie L. Brockington Shokes Speers, and a widower of the late Julie Miles Shokes. Mr. Shokes was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. He was a 1951 graduate of The Citadel. While there, Mr. Shokes was a member of the Citadel Boxing team for all four years, fought in the Golden Gloves, and afterwards became a professional boxer for four years. When he left The Citadel, Mr. Shokes entered the United States Army. He served in Korea as an infantry officer, was an honor graduate of the Command of General Staff College, and spent thirty-three years in the United States Army Reserve. After the Korean War, Mr. Shokes was hired by the United States Custom Service in Charleston where he worked for thirty-three years before moving to Lake City in 1989. While in Charleston, Mr. Shokes was member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was a Mason- becoming a WM and a Shriner, was District Governor of Civitans, and was a very active Rotarian in both Charleston and Lake City. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Brousseau (Ken) of Scottsdale, AZ; a half-brother, Merrill Speers (Martha) of Jacksonville, FL; a niece, Ashley Crooms (Jason) of Jacksonville, FL; and a nephew, Tommy Campbell of Gaffney; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Miles (Elwyn Isgett) of Scranton. Mr. Shokes is preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Campbell and Doris Connelly. The family of Mr. Shokes will have visitation from 6 – 8 p.m., Sunday, February 8th, 2009 in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mr. Shokes will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 9th, 2009 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lake City Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Post Office Box 5216, Glen Alan, Virginia 23058; or to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, South Carolina 29501.
