Lt. Col. H.W. Carroll Furman, U.S. Army (Ret.), Colonel, Unorganized Militia of South Carolina, and Brigadier (Honorary), a resident of Camden, SC, died Tuesday, August 30, 2011. He was predeceased by his spouse, Nola Harrington Furman. He is survived by his children, Dr. Wyndol Furman (Donna) of Denver, CO, Duncan F. Furman (Charlotte Claussen) of Denver, CO, and Alexa F. Stuart (Jim) of Irmo, SC; and three grandchildren, Alexander Reed Furman (Julie), Mary Katharine Stuart and Grace Carroll Stuart. Born in Bennettsville, SC, he was the son of the late Ricky L. Furman and Nell Carroll Furman Miller. Col. Furman was a combat infantry veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 11th Airborne Division. He was a graduate of The Citadel and earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He graduated from Officers Candidate School and had been inducted into that school’s Hall of Fame. As a result of his service to South Carolina, Furman was awarded The Order of the Palmetto by Governor Carroll Campbell. He was a colorful character and member of the Explorers Club and an avid writer, publishing five books. Upon retirement from the regular Army, he practiced law with the late Governor and Ambassador John C. West of Camden, and with former member of the United States Congress, Kenneth Holland. He was Senior Partner of Furman, Speedy and Stegner and he retired GÇÿOf Counsel’ to George W. Speedy, Esq. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 5, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 832 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, SC. A Requiem Mass will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 1612 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC, on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brookgreen Gardens, 1931 Brookgreen Gardens Drive, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 or the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020.
