Herman Benjamin Brewton, Jr., 78, of Savannah, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Hospice Savannah. He was born in Lanier, Georgia, graduated from Bryan County High School in 1943, then attended The Citadel prior to serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the destroyer, the USS Brownson. After the war, he returned to The Citadel and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in the class of 1949. He married Mary Donaldson of Waycross, Georgia in 1950. He worked briefly for the Georgia State Highway Department (now DOT) before moving to Savannah in 1957 and beginning a long career in the pulp and paper industry. He worked for Union Camp, Continental Can, and Stone Container as a civil engineer, mill maintenance superintendent, and construction project manager for projects throughout the southeast. He is survived by his wife Mary Donaldson Brewton of Savannah, a son, Ben Brewton III of Lanier, Bryan County, Georgia, a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Stuart Whitaker of Savannah, two grandsons, Christopher Brewton of Athens, Georgia, and Matthew Blood of Savannah, and one great-grandson.
