Groover Bartow Blitch, 85, of Raleigh, N.C., died peacefully at home on August 27, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Groover was born January 17, 1939 in Statesboro, Georgia to the late Winifred and Groover Blitch Sr. After graduating from The Citadel in 1961, Groover joined the United States Marine Corp proudly serving his country until 1971. Groover realizing that he could not work sitting behind a desk, went into business for himself in 1967 opening the first free standing Dunkin’ Donuts in North Carolina which he and his beloved wife operated for 47 years.
Groover lived life to the fullest. His love for Christ, his family, and his country was evident in everything he did. He was an avid runner completing multiple marathons and also enjoyed golfing, sailing, skiing, and cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes. Groover never met a stranger and was always there to help those in need.
He was a life-long member of Millbrook United Methodist Church serving the Lord in various roles over the years. Groover was a devoted husband, father, and a great friend to many. Throughout his lifetime he touched so many lives and although he will be dearly missed, we know he is home and at peace.
Groover is survived by his wife Joyce of 61 years, three sisters, three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the SarahCare staff, the Amedisys Hospice staff and home health care aide Gwyn Owens and staff for the love and care they provided.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday September 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Millbrook United Methodist Church with a reception following at the church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Millbrook United Methodist Church, The Alzheimer’s Association, or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
